Business and Domestic Alarms: What Insurance Companies Require

Is Your Intruder Alarm Covered By An Insurance Company?
Some Insurance companies offer reduced premiums on alarms that they approve, but how will you choose a supplier? Alarms companies in Bristol provide the answer.

NSI and SSAIB Listing
There are two independent bodies within the UK that audit alarm companies; the NSI and SSAIB. Insurance companies expect that your alarm is installed by one of the alarm installation companies listed with these bodies. Make sure that your chosen intruder alarm installers are registered with one of these organisations to be assured that you are insured.

Home Intruder Alarms
Home insurance firms normally insist that any alarm is serviced under a maintenance contract by an NSI or SSAIB listed supplier. Several insurers then offer a reduced price for insurance premiums, after all home owners are more likely to call in their alarm supplier in the event of a fault or problem if they are covered by an alarm service contract and the insurance company recognises this probability in its charges.

Commercial Burglar Alarms
Company leaders are usually required to fit a burglar alarm and source a maintenance contract before their insurer will cover them. From time to time insurers insist on a grade 2 or 3 system in accordance with the EN50131 standards and dictate if it should include monitoring and/or a police response.

Business insurers can specify a Redcare GSM signalling system or Dualcom GPRS system as they involve using two methods of sending a signal about a activated alarm. If a phone line is severed or is faulty, signals are sent by the GPRS or GSM mobile network, which means these systems are highly effective.

Association of Chief Police Officers (ACPO) Regulations
The Association of Chief Police Officers also stipulate that alarms are installed by NSI and SSAIB approved firms. Your alarm company should also be listed with them, especially if you require a police response as a condition of cover

Security alarm systems, installed to EN50131 and ACPO (Association of Chief Police Officers) standards, by an alarm company approved by the NSI or SSAIB are the only ones that benefit from an automatic police response. Bristol alarms are an example of such a company.

Lower Insurance Premiums
In mid 2007 Aviva (then Norwich Union) Risk Services called for UK businesses to put in alarms fitted by NSI or SSAIB approved companies. According to their research, 25% of businesses may have insufficient alarm protection. In addition they recommend putting in a burglar alarm in residential property too and keeping it serviced annually. Aviva is one of the major insurance firms that do lower premiums when a satisfactory alarm system is installed.
